This is the first chapter of a story I am writing, I hope you like it
A secret identity, a secret life -- is it worth it if you’re all alone?
--
”One…two…three!” the girl landed with both feet securely on the big white square on the floor. She let out a small sigh of relief as she looked around at the huge pattern of white and black squares, this would take longer then she thought. “You can do it Lia” She said and looked around again.
She took a leap past the two nearest squares and landed on the correct one. She followed the pattern she had in her head, reading the numbers as she took them. Then finally she landed on the last one, there the walls opened up to the large room before her.
“Bingo” she smiled as she slid off her bag from her back. She pulled up a can of what looked like spray-paint. However as she started to spray on the air before her tiny red lines appeared. “Gotcha” She smiled and with a close hold of the can she moved into the room, carefully maneuvering around the lines.
She finally found herself standing in front of the old bookcase and her eyes scanned the backs of the books. She knew it was one of them, she also knew that one or several were traps. She really didn’t need a trap. She thought about pulling them all out, letting the alarm go off and try and get away before he came. No, she pushed the thought out of her head; she knew which one it was. Or at least she should now which one it was.
“Think Lia” she said and looked at the books. The first row was dictionaries, they said nothing. Next there was one thick black one…she let her fingers trace it about a millimeter away before she stopped. “He doesn’t read, he would never hide it there, too suspicious” she sighed but suddenly she spotted the thin blue book beside it, almost hidden in the darkness. “Bingo” she moved up and carefully slipped it out.
She held her breath half expecting the alarm to go off but there was nothing, just a very annoying silence that by now started to make her ears hurt. She let the air out of her lungs and moved away from the bookshelf.
She made it all the way out of the room and closed the door. She turned around and was just about to walk down the corridor when all sudden there was a guy starring at her only a few centimeters away.
“What are you doing here?” he asked and leaned his body against the wall beside him. “You should not be here….”
She didn’t know if she should be repulsed that this guy, surely ten years passed her age was hitting on her or be scared that she had gotten caught.
“You should come with me, I have this nice cabin just a round the corner” he said, he was slurring on his words and she moved away slightly uncomfortable.
“How charming” she said and she did nothing to hide the sarcasm in her voice.
“You’re coming with me, I can show you some fun” he grinned and grabbed hold of her left arm.
“I can find fun on my own thank you very much” she pulled her arm back. But he wouldn’t let her get away that easy as he pushed his body towards her in an attempt to trap her against the wall. “That’s it” she slammed her right fist into his face hitting his cheek and nose. The punch was precise like always and soon a red shape started to form over his face and he slid to the floor.
“You bitch” he cried as he covered his face with his hands.
“Yeah tell me something I don’t know” she stepped over him and walked down the corridor still with the book in her left hand.
She hurried down the network of corridors until she reached the right one. She pulled up her card and unlocked the door. She made sure she was really alone before she took up the phone on the small table. She dialed the numbers and sat down on the queen size bed as she finally started to relax.
“Hallo” the man said shortly.
“I got it” she said. It was all he needed to know right now.
“Good, make sure you hand it over to him then” and by that the clicking sound of the call disconnecting was heard.
Delia slammed the phone down and fell back against the bed with a deep sigh. “Good job Lia, nice going” she said in a mocked voice as she slowly sat back up again. She knew it was silly, she never got credit but then again why would she want it. She knew she was good at what she did…so what if no one knew what she was doing…
She rose again and let her eyes go over the watch on the wall and she couldn’t help but let out a few well directed swear words as she started to take off her shoes. She hurried to the bathroom, grabbing a pile of clothes on her way.
--
“I can duck alarms and jump over fire but I can’t get in time for a stupid family dinner…” she mumbled as she walked down the corridor.
She walked up the small set of stairs and made it to the large double doors. She stopped to take a deep breath and straightened out her dress before she walked inside.
She spotted her parents right away, they were seated at the end of the big dining room and she could see her two year older brother there as well. “Perfect” she sighed and started to walked to the table. With every step she took she wished she would disappear.
“Well look who finally decided to show up” the man at the table looked up and sent her a stern look.
“I’m only ten minutes late dad” she said as she sat down.
“Well a person can do a lot in ten minutes” he stated but couldn’t say more as the waiter showed up with four plates of food.
“I hope you don’t mind but we ordered for you” her mother said.
“Thanks” Delia answered with a smile as the food was placed before her.
“So what was it this time?” her brother asked. “Some aliens invaded your room and stole your shoes?” he mocked.
“You saw them too?” she returned with a smile but he just shook his head and went back to his food.
“Can’t you try for just one night and be normal?” her father shook his head in frustration.
“Fine then can you for just one night try and be a real father” she shot back. She knew it hit home because he lowered his head and that hurt look appeared in his eyes.
“Delia” her mother said. “Say you’re sorry.”
“Look we all know we’re not a family so why even try?” she asked. “This…” she flew her hands out over the room. “…is all a charade.”
“Please…” her mother started but Delia cut her off.
“No I think I lost my appetite” she rose and walked out of the dining room.
She didn’t head back to her room; instead she took a left outside the dining room and came out of the cool deck. She moved across the wooden deck over to the railing on the side. From there she could see the people on the deck under her; some were sitting there, looking at the stars, some where just walking. Further out she saw the wide ocean that in the darkness looked almost black.
“You really shouldn’t be like that” she turned around as she saw him walk up to her. He leaned on the railing and kept his eyes at the ocean before them.
“Sam…” she started but he cut her off.
“Look I know, okay” he turned to face his sister. “I know just as well as you do that they are no parents but they are trying.”
“They get us on a cruise and that means they are trying?” she asked with a small laugh.
“True” he replied. “Sometimes I just wish things were different. You know that I was someone and that I could…”
“Get out” Delia said and he laughed.
“Something like that, yeah.”
She opened her mouth to say she knew what he meant. She wanted so bad to tell him the truth, tell him about her job - but she couldn’t. She knew that would be too risky…so instead she swallowed her urge to be honest.
“You know Sammy we will do okay” she said. “You will be someone and then you will take me to your mansion” she added with a smile.
“Sure you can clean it for me” he added with a wide grin that resulted in his sister slapping him on the arm.
“You wish.”
“I do” he laughed. “Well I should get inside and make sure they don’t send anyone after us” he moved for the door but stopped when he noticed that she was not moving. “You coming?”
“I’ll be there in a while, just need to clear my head” she answered.
Sam left and Delia remained by the railing, but only for a few seconds before she began to walk down the stairs. He fingers slid over the steel railing on her way down and her eyes were focused on the sea before her and soon she was standing on the lower deck. She heard the laughter from some kids playing on her right as she moved up to the railing. She leaned down on it and gazed down into the bubbling water underneath.
“Thinking about jumping?” the voice made her turn around in surprise but as she saw who it was she relaxed.
“Zack” she said with a small smile but the smile soon changed into a frown. “They sent you to check up on me, didn’t they?”
Zack couldn’t help but smile as he moved up beside her by the railing. “No, I was sent to stay back and help if something went wrong” he admitted.
“Nice way of trusting me” Delia muttered as she turned back around so her eyes met the water once more.
“They just like being safe” Zack replied as he turned around as well. His eyes wandered out over the sea as he expected her to say something – but she remained silent. “So did you get it?” he asked and carefully looked over at her.
She turned and starred at him, slightly rolling her eyes at the look on his face. “Of course I got it, why wouldn’t I get it? It was very simple” she stated and pushed away the thoughts of doubt she remembered from earlier that night.
“Can I see it?” Zack asked.
“What you don’t believe me?” she narrowed her eyes at him.
“Sure I do” he sighed. “I just want to see it, you know see what all the fuzz is about.”
“Fine Mr. Know it all” she muttered and spun her shoulder bag around to the front. She started to open it and Zack let out a small whistle. “What?” she looked up.
“You carry it with you?” he grinned. “How original.”
“Oh shut up” she shot back. “You wanna see it or not?”
“I do” He said and put on his innocent look.
“Okay” Delia pulled up the small book from her bag and opened it so she could see what it was.
Zack moved closer to her so that he too could read. His eyes scanned the first page and soon his forehead was riddled with wrinkles. “What the hell is this thing?” he looked up at Delia.
“Well how am I supposed to know?” she shot back a bit agitated. She looked down at the numbers that covered the first page and tried to see if there was any way she could figure it out – but it was just one big mess for her.
“Got anything there Einstein?” Zack mocked and she looked up from the book.
“Sure, anyone could understand that” She replied with a slight roll of her eyes.
“Right?” Zack laughed before he stepped back from the railing. “Well have fun reading then, I am off to do some fun” he added with a smile before he headed up the narrow staircase until he was out of her sight.
Delia looked back at the book for a second and then let it slip right back into her bag again. That was a mystery for someone else; she was just to get it. She was the getter you could say; there were other people to solve the clues.
She moved up the staircase and looked in through the large window into the dining room. The soft golden light was lying over the tables and people were talking and laughing.
“Time to be nice” She said to herself as she straightened her back, put on a smile, made sure the book was safe in her bag and then walked inside…
