My Pathway of Deception
I stared at the long narrow path I’d worn into the ground. The path I’d taken every day for the path three years. The path itself looked beautiful, long and winding. It wore a gown of glitter white crystals which danced daintily in the sunlight. As beautiful as this path was, it could have been considered deceiving. For day after day it lead its creator to a life of pain and deception. The person that owned this path had none of its beautiful qualities, but received all the pain it had to offer. This person was a tall, scrawny, lanky, teenage boy named Larry. A.K.A. me.
As usual I followed the pathway up to my high school, Glenora Prep. As I approached the main entrance I began to brace myself for the cruel names and the knuckle sandwich I was about to receive. Then I saw Tony standing off in the distance with his posse. They all wore the same rugged leather jackets and over worn Levi Jeans. “Hmmm, just maybe I can sneak past Tony,” I pondered. I slowly lifted up my right foot and placed it on the cold concrete ground. Just as I began to take my next step Tony’s ears perked up like a cats. He then shot me a sharp, nasty, glare. It went right through my skin and sank to the core of my soul. Then the words came.
“Look, nerdster is here” Tony’s voiced echoed through the vast school yard. Everyone began to stare at me they were all sharks hungry for the mid-morning gossip. My knees turned to jelly, my heart raced, I squeezed my eyelids tightly together, hoping it would all go away. “Look dorkster is gonna cry,” Tony snarled as he approached me. He walked slowly his eyes glaring with anger. He was a lion ready to pounce on his prey. “You gonna cry,” he taunted, “ah, do you need your mommy?”
“No I’m not gonna cry” I quivered, “and I don’t need my mommy either!”
“Well hows about I give you something to cry about then!” Tony threatened.
“Please leave me alone,” I begged “I’ll do anything!”
“Please leave me alone, wah, wah, wah!” Tony sneered, “Now I’d think you’d know me better than that!” Tony then threw me onto the snowy path I had previously imprinted into the ground. I hear his friends behind me snickering with delight. Somebody began to tug on my arm toying with it, while someone else was having the time of their life impounding their foot into my stomach. Then all of a sudden I felt an immense force against my head, throwing it to the left, and then back to the right.
“Come on Tony lets go, we can’t do anymore to this sucker,” somebody chuckled.
“Okay just one more thing!” Tony exclaimed. Then I was kicked in a place no man wishes to be kicked! They all sauntered off proud of the piece of artwork they had created. The one lying down in the blood stained snow whimpering like a sad dog.
Every minute seemed like eternity, as I lay there in what felt like a frozen grave. I couldn’t move, my body ached, and I could barely move a muscle. All I could do was lay there lifelessly and stare up at the sky, which ironically gave me a sympathetic glance.
“What a loser,” the wind whispered, as it flowed gracefully from tree to tree. I knew this jester was no more than my mind playing tricks on me. It’s like how the sky at this moment appeared a dusty purple, when it really wasn’t, and how the angel above me appeared real, when it really was no more than an illusion.
“Wait a moment!” I pondered “Angel?” I blinked numerous times to make sure this was real. I had to be dead! The angel had long blonde hair, which was smooth and silky. Her eyes gleamed with happiness.
“Everything is going to be okay,” she sang as royal trumpets began to play joyfully in the background.
“Oh, glory hallelujah!” I exclaimed “Lord take me now!” But, before I knew it heaven had turned into a white blur.
I awoke on a hard cold mattress. The room I was in was dark and cramped. It reeked of sanitizer and the smell was so dense is that it burned my throat as it crept in. A figure suddenly appeared in the doorway. It was tall and lean, I squinted but it was no use I still couldn’t make out the person’s identity.
“Hello?” I called hungry for answers “Who’s there?” The figure then stepped into the dim light, which was dancing through the window. Her hair was long, wavy, and blond. Her crystal blue eyes glittered with concern. It was the angel “Are you awake?” her heavenly voice asked.
“Yes,” I said softly. She then sat down beside me, and placed her hand on top of mine. Her touch was soft and light. At this exact moment the sun shone on her fair skin revealing her true identity to me and the rest of the world.
My mouth felt bone dry, it hurt to breathe. Why, because right in front of me sat Clarice, Tony’s girlfriend.
“Why on earth are you here?” I stuttered.
“I wanted to….”
“To what...?"I exclaimed “Pull the final plug!”
“No I just came to help,” she murmured
“To help me get a knuckle sandwich,” I snapped.
“Just hear me out, okay?” Clarice cried, “I know how you feel. The pain, the emotional, stress, the constant questioning of why? “Her beautiful face had now grown sad and anxious. Her crystal eyes filled with sorrow. Her shiny eyes had now become dull and lifeless. Even just looking at her made me want to cry.
“Okay,” I replied, “I’ll hear you out, but it better be good!”
“Thanks,” she sniffled, “I’ve been in an abusive relationship with Tony for the past three months. He has beaten me worse than you Larry!” Her face still held the same painful expression, which told me she wasn’t lying. We experienced a long silence, just staring directly into each other’s eyes, and for the first time I saw her as Clarice and not the angel. I noticed the vast amount of concealer caked on her face to hide the bruises. Her shirt was draped over her covering her arms. Yet through all that pain she still appeared beautiful. She was exactly like me! The path of beauty I carved into the ground not only represented me, but Clarice also.
“You can change,” she mumbled all of a sudden, “you can make your life better!”
“No,” I exclaimed, “We can make our life better. I looked her directly in the eye and I noticed a flicker of hope in her lonely eyes. “You want to try?” I questioned.
“You bet!” she shouted. Her face then returned to its angelic state. We stayed there in total silence, happy with the plans we had just reached.
Slowly I began to smile, but I still had one question rambling in the back of my mind. I had wanted to ask it since I saw Clarice, but I just couldn’t bring myself to ask her. Finally I decided to bite the bullet and question her. “Why did you save me?” I whispered.
“I didn’t save you,” she replied “fate did!” She then strolled out of the room, as graceful as a swan.
Fortunately, the doctors advised, my mother to keep me home until Friday. I personally, thought this was great! It gave me time to practice, my speech. Everyday I stood in front of my mirror flexing my muscles, and rehearsing my speech. In the blink of an eye Friday was here already.
Clarice came over on Friday morning so we could walk to school together. Today was the big day! Today would change our lives, today would be my last day known as Nerdster at Glenora Prep. Today was a day for change!
Clarice and I walked on the well beaten path across the field that led to school. It was just as beautiful as ever, even the dark red bloodstain, only accented its beauty. Roughly halfway to school we noticed Tony and his gang marching across the field as if they owned it. They came closer and closer by the second. Doubt began to cross my mind. “No,” I told myself,” you have to do this!”
By now Tony was standing right in front of us, ready to pounce. “Clarice get away from that loser!” Tony hollered.
“No!” Clarice yelled
“Just do it!” he screeched.
“No!” Clarice debated.
“Okay, you’re asking for it ,” threatened Tony as he grabbed Clarice’s shirt collar.
“Stop it!” I yelled as I jumped between them.
“Move it dorkster!” Tony demanded.
“No! “I said firmly. So I’ll just have to….” He stuttered.
“Do what - you can’t do anything about it!”
I chuckled as I quickly lifted my arm up preparing to give Tony his favorite meal, a knuckle sandwich.
“Oh, please don’t” Tony cried horrifically.
“Now do you really think I’d do that?” I chuckled.
“No, not really,” he responded.
“Truce,” I suggested.
“Truce,” Tony replied as he shook my hand firmly surprising both Clarice and I. He then pranced away with his friends searching for someone else to prey on. I was just glad it would not be me now!
“Oh, you’re so brave!” gasped Clarice,” you’re just like Achilles!” Then suddenly she kissed me daintily on my check. My face turned as red as a tomato, Clarice liked me, she really liked me!
Looking back over my path I had trampled into the snow I realized I had one thing left to do. I then leaped happily to my right and began walking in snow five inches deep. It was ice cold and it sent chills up my spine, but it didn’t bother me at all. It was completely worth it!
“What on earth are you doing?” Clarice chuckled.
“Standing up for my self,” I suggested, “or changing paths?”
“Well let me join you” Clarice laughed as she ran up beside me and joyfully grabbed my hand.
We then waltzed happily into the mid-day sun, anxiously awaiting the days to come. We both triumphed over our adversity and now we could live a life with a bright outlook and a smooth new path ahead. It may not be as breathtaking as the last one,A
but it was a lot more beautiful underneath the snow!
