1. Prologue
“I died my hair blonde” she said it just before he walked away but it made him stop “The day after Derek moved out. Change is good…your mirage is over, you’re starting over…so am I…” if only she knew how right yet wrong she was…
--
She was running down the crowded hospital corridor. In her hand she held the small black pager and her feet moved as on auto pilot. She successfully dodged past the guy cleaning the floors and took a sharp left turn, leaving her in yet another corridor.
“Addie” she stopped and slid slightly against the wet floor before she turned around.
“Derek” she said with a small smile. “Is it important, I have a baby who needs surgery so I am kind of…”
“Busy yeah I see that” he said. “And no it’s not important, we can talk later” he added.
“Okay then” Addison gave him an apologetic smile before she hurried off towards the elevators.
She pushed the button and looked up. The small numbers told her it was on the top floor, it would take ages before it reached her floor. She glanced over at the door that led to the stairs, it was just one floor down…she could make it faster.
She opened the door and took one step down the stairs before she felt the door slip out of her hand. She took one step back to secure her footing but her foot missed the step and she felt her body begin to fall…--
The sharp sound of the machine beside her slowly started to enter her mind. She opened her eyes to find nothing but what looked like a very foggy room. She blinked a few more times and soon the room started to come more and more in focus. The white walls moved closer on her and she tried to sit up but her body protested by shooting waves of pain and she gave up. Instead she found the small button beside the bed and pushed it.
Soon the door to the room opened and a young woman dressed in what she guessed was a nurse’s outfit walked in.
“How are you feeling?” she asked.
“What happened?” Addison asked as she closed her eyes, trying to think back to what could have happened to put her in a hospital.
“You fell down the stairs here in the hospital” the nurse said as she picked up a chart and started to look through it.
“Why was I in the hospital?” Addison asked confused.
“You work here” the nurse looked up to see if Addison was joking but the straight face on the red-haired woman told her it was not a joke. “You’re a surgeon here at Seattle grace hospital, did you forget that?”
Addison just shook her head and tried to clear it. But all she could see, or maybe feel was darkness. There was nothing there…
“What’s my name?” she asked and looked up at the nurse.
“You don’t remember your name?” the nurse asked. “Maybe I should get your doctor?”
“You know me, please just say my name” Addison begged and the nurse sat down next to the bed.
“You’re name is Addison Montgomery” she said slowly but Addison just sighed, the name didn’t make anything come back.
“I’ll go get your doctor” the nurse hurried up on her feet and escaped from the room.
“How can it just be gone?” Addison asked into the empty room as she felt tears about to break out. “How can I not know who I am?”
Seconds later the door opened and a man walked in. The first thing she noticed about him was his eyes, those soft eyes that seemed to draw her own to them.
“Addie how are you feeling?” he asked and sat down on the side of the bed, looking down at her with those eyes…those eyes that were filled with concern for her.
“I don’t remember anything” she said. “How can I not remember anything, not even my own name?”
“You had a pretty bad fall, temporary amnesia isn’t that uncommon” he answered. He had that whole doctor front on but for some reason she felt something else, she felt as if she had known him.
“Do I know you?” she asked and looked closer at him, how he pulled back slightly and how his eyes left hers. “If I did then please just tell me, don’t give me the doctor talk…just tell me if I will remember.”
“I don’t know” Derek answered truthfully. “And yes we used to know each other. We were friends, good friends...”
“Then tell me, tell me who I am” Addison said. “Please…” she added as he rose from his position on the bed.
“I can’t tell you everything about you, your memories have to come in time” Derek said.
“Please…” Addison begged once more but he walked out of the room, leaving her alone once more. It didn’t feel odd though, she had a feeling she was used to it…as if she had been alone a lot before…
