Summary: A meeting with a young girl makes Addison start to question her own pregnancy.
Addison yawned widely as she stepped out from Starbucks with a cup of steaming hot coffee in her right hand. She gave her watch a quick look over and realized she had plenty of time for once. So instead of rushing like she usually did she walked calmly down the street, giving herself time to look at the people around her. She had always loved to just watch people but she didn’t usually have time, so this just made her morning oh so much more peaceful.
She stopped outside the large glass doors that led into the Oceanside wellness center and swallowed down the last of her coffee before she disposed of her cup into the trashcan. She adjusted her white shirt to cover the small bump that was starting to form underneath. She was still to tell her colleagues about that, Alex said she was putting it off because she was lazy. Addison however was more of the idea that she was putting it off because she had seen to many pregnancies in her job and knew that you could never be sure.
She was just about to reach to open the door when a hand bet her to it. Addison looked down and spotted a young girl with flowing dark hair. She gave the girl a smile but only received a faint one in return before the girl walked inside. Addison soon followed and let the heavy doors close behind her as she headed for the elevator…
She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holdin' back
Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with linen and lace
“Vi” it was a little while later that Addison hurried out from her office to catch the brunette.
“Addie” Violet turned around and gave her friend a smile. “What’s up?”
“Who’s that girl?” Addison asked in a voice that was hardly more then a whisper now as she watched the same you girl from before as she was standing in the lobby talking to a man.
“That is Annie, she is Henry’s daughter. I think they are you neighbors too actually” Violet nodded towards the man. “She comes in here a few times a week to see him…” her voice died out and Addison who was clearly interested nudged her to continue.
“She…I just get this weird feeling” Violet shrugged. “But it’s not our business.”
“But…” Addison started but stopped as Annie walked towards them.
“Hi Violet” Annie said with a smile.
“Hi sweetie, how’s life?”
“Good” Annie shrugged as she walked past them.
“I think I know what feeling you mean” Addison mumbled as she followed the girl with her eyes. Even if it was several feet between her and the girl she was still sure she had seen a large bruise on her arm underneath the shear fabric of her top.
The doctor wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born
“It’s not our responsibility” Pete said after Addison had finished her story at the meeting.
“But…” Addison started.
“No Pete is right” Naomi sighed. “Unless the girl comes and asks for help you can not just go in.”
“But someone is hurting her” Addison said and looked over the room; even Alex had his eyes into the desk to avoid her. “Fine lets just wait for whoever it is to kill her” she spun around on her heel and stormed out of the office.
“I’ll go” Alex pulled himself up from the chair after no one made any sign of wanting to be the one to go.
He found her sitting in one of the chairs in the lobby. To anyone one else she would have been just another visitor but the way she was digging her nails into the brown Prada bag in her lap told him just how mad she really was.
“Add…” he tried and sunk down in the chair next to hers.
“I don’t want to hear how I’m wrong” Addison stated firmly.
“I know” Alex nodded. “And I bet in any other situation you would be right…”
“So what makes this one so special?” She shot him a dark look.
“Because we have no proof and she doesn’t seem to want help” he said.
“Since when are you so rational?” she asked. “Ever since you left those friends of yours you have become so damn grown up” she groaned.
“Isn’t that a good thing?” he laughed.
“Yes…just not when it comes to these things” she sighed. “Maybe I should have brought Stevens instead, she would have adopted the girl by now.”
“Sure she would have” Alex nodded and took her hand in his. “But she’s not half the fun I am…”
Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel
Hours later Addison finally made it into bed. She had left a few unfinished charts on her desk but she was too tired to even think of them right then. She tucked the warm blankets around herself and allowed her eyes to close.
It was only minutes later that a scream cut through the night and her eyes shot open again.
“Alex?” she called but when she got no reply she got up from the bed. She walked out into the living room and sighed in relief as she spotted him at the window. “Who screamed?”
“I don’t know” he said and turned to face her. “But it stopped.”
“Maybe we should get back to bed then…” Addison said but she couldn’t help to send a look at the white house next to theirs. The light in the window that had been out minutes earlier was not lit...
--
“ALEX!” Addison’s frantic voice pulled him out of sleep and he sat up so fast his head was spinning. “Alex” she appeared in the bedroom door her eyes red from tears. “She’s gone.”
“Who is?” Alex hurried up on his feet as she walked back to the living room and he followed. He found her t the large windows.
“She was the one screaming” Addison said quietly as she watched several men roll out a gurney with a small girl on it. The dark hair was now lifeless and her face hard as stone.
“Oh sweetie…” Alex wrapped his arms around Addison and she let her head fall back against his chest.
“We could have saved her…”
Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late
The rain was pouring down as she walked over the grass. Her heels were sinking down into the mud deeper for each step but she didn’t care. A single red rose was clutched in her hand as she finally made it to the right place.
She bent down and let her fingers go over the name on the rock, following every curve as she silently said the name.
Annie.
“I’m sorry” she said quietly as she let the rose fall onto the grass in front of the stone. It was the only one so far. “I’m sorry I didn’t save you.” Instinctually her left hand made it to her stomach. “I’m not sorry I met you Annie, maybe we were meant to meet…I just weren’t meant to save you…”
Addison rose to her feet again and gave the headstone one more look before she turned and walked towards her car. It was time she told some people about her pregnancy…there was no point in living with fear from something anymore…especially when her fear seemed so small compared to Annie’s…

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot
Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel
