Break it Off – A greys fanfic
Disclaimer- I do not own greys anatomy and the characters in this fancfic, other than John. The Lyrics are Cut it off, by Tegan and Sara for Meredith point of view. And, for Derek’s I used falling or flying By Grace Potter.
Summary: We all know that Derek and Meredith are perfect for each other in our own minds but reality begs to differ. It may just take them another break-up to realize what they really mean to each other, and what life is really without one another in there lives. Plus this time Meredith’s gets a chance to crack Derek’s heart for once.
Note this is only the skeleton version... rough draft.
MERIDETH
I won't regret saying this
This thing that I'm saying
Is it better than keeping my mouth shut
That goes without saying
“It's okay Derek,” she cried as she threw open the large glass doors separating them from the bitter fall air. The frigid wind shocked her forced her to stop, enabling Derek to catch up with her. The sun had evanesced to no more than a thin streak of gold along the horizon while stars gracefully twilled around the deep harvest moon. She could feel him behind her, she longed to turn around and be lost in his words, believe what he was saying to be true. She wanted to love him, but... Her thoughts where abruptly interrupted by his seductive voice.
“Meredith, please listen,” he pleaded.
“What!” she snapped, she could tell her tone had hurt him, but to her in this moment he was not Derek the love of her life, he was the ass that just screwed everything up yet again.
“I know I said I would always be there and when you where ready I’d be there waiting for you,” he quoted, “but things have changed. How would Rose feel if I left her after 3 months to be with my ex-girl friend? How would I even begin to tell her that I’ve been sneaking around with you let alone leaving her? “
“How do you think I feel!” she protested, “You broke my heart, and left me for Addison. Then I met Fin, who was probably the best thing that had ever happened to me, and I left him. Why? Because, you started saying all these nice things that I’ve always wanted you to say, and now you’re telling me I have to wait for you fling to be over?”
“Not much longer,” he promised.
“Addison was right to leave you,” she sneered as she turned on her heel and marched across the parking lot.
“Meredith” his voice cracked, “What are you saying?”
She wanted to run back and apologize to have his arms snugly wrapped around her protecting her from the cold, from all the worlds’ danger, and most of all from herself. She was ready to turn back but instead she found herself, debating her own feeling for him.
“I...I...I” she stuttered.
“You, what?” He questioned, his eyes began pool with water.
“I’m leaving you Derek.” Her voice was calm, but instead she was a complete war zone, not only had she broke Derek’s heart but she had also thrown her own into the shredder. “Goodbye Derek” she softly whispered, as she slipped into the driver’s side of her car. She had almost no recollection of the past 10 minutes, but she knew she was far from herself, far from what she wanted and she loved it.
Call, break it off
Call, break my own heart
Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at
Maybe you would have been something I'd be good at
But now we'll never know

DEREK
We got lost again
Drove to the end of a road
And a red aced man
Taught us to do what we're told
And on the 23rd night
Things ain't bad but things ain't right
Are we falling or flying
Are we falling or flying
Are we living or dying
I guess we'll never know
He walked the long halls like a ghost; the regular swarms of people became strangers to him. He stumbled down the hall a drunken man, intoxicated by the pain and misery inflicted by the love of his life. It took him forever but he finally made it into the Chief’s office. It would be a quick visit, for he knew what he wanted, and like a cat he slipped expensive, satisfying scotch out of the bottom drawer of the chief’s massive mahogany desk.
It was difficult he to transport his sweet little baby across the hall to his crammed stuffy office, Meredith and most of the other residents had long got home, and the only souls that dared to walk the halls of Seattle Grace were a couple a naive interns and the odd nurse. He laid out three shot glasses and began a strange drinking ritual.
“The first one is for Meredith,” he chanted allowed.
“The second is for all the good times we’ve had”
“The third, well.... it’s for........”
“Derek,” a familiar voice challenged, “What the hell do you think you’ve doing.”
“What does it look like Mark?” he groaned, “Making kool-aide?” He looked at the man, he’s eyes glistened with concern. He knew. He had to. “Didn’t you have plans?”
“I did,” he said a parent like tone present in his voice, “Until I saw my best friend arguing with his girlfriend in the parking lot.”
“Correction,” Derek sighed, “my ex-girlfriend.”
“Are you serious? What on earth did you do to her? She knew about Rose? What about another man is it another man? Come on man dish.”
“She wanted to commit.”
“So, What?” Sloan questioned a bit dumbfounded by his friends answer, “Isn’t that what you wanted?”
“I ... thhhought so, but.... it’s Rose.” There sat there in silence for a moment, both trying to take a surgical view of the situation. They had gone in expecting one out come and once they broke open the body cavity they had received a completely one. Sloan had just opened his mouth to speak when a knock on the door disturbed the sweet comfort that hovered between them.
“Derek,” a woman whispered sweet, “Is it okay if I come in?” In an instant there eyes gazed at the doorway, praying the young voice belong to no one other than Meredith Grey.
Sometimes its hard tot ell
if there's a life behind a song
but I know tomorrow
today won't feel so long
because on the 42nd night
the room was dark but the stage was bright
The figure stepped into the dim light of the office, revealing themselves to the two men. Within the golden light appeared Rose, her face gleaming with happiness. Today she wore pink scrubs, with tiny images of teddy bears scattered across them. The salmon color lit up her skin giving her some sort of heavenly glow.
“I’ll leave you two along,” Sloan slide as he slipped out the door. He watched her; she was staring at the set of shot glasses on the otherwise clean desk. Her smile instantly faded into a look a deep concern.
“What wrong?” she questioned hungry for answers.
“There’s another woman,” he cried, “Or at least was another woman, she ended it today. I ... I... I.”
“It’s Okay” she spoke as she sat in front of him. He hung his head in his hands, for as many times he has had this conversation it didn’t make it much easier. He was ashamed to look at her.
“Her name was.....”
“Shhh...” she said as she clasped her hands around his, “I don’t need to know, we can get though this. If you want too.”
“I’m sorry,” he sighed stroking his fingers though her thick chocolate hair.
“I know,” she smiled as she leaned into him as kissed him softly. “I know.”
It had been a long , long night but maybe Rose was just what he needed, she was smart, gorgeous and most of all just there. He sat there her arms snugly around his neck, protecting him from the world. He knew in this moment he may be in love.
Are we falling or flying
Are we falling or flying
Are we living or dying
Cause my friend this too shall pass
So play every show like it's your last
